N.C. Cooperative Extension of Avery County recently assisted the Avery County Health Department in a joint effort with numerous departments in Avery County, including Emergency Management, EMS, Sheriff’s Department, Senior Center, Recreation Department, and County Manager’s office, by working diligently to provide the first round of COVID-19 vaccines for Avery County.
The newest addition to the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Avery County Center, “The Conference Center at Heritage Park,” was utilized as the vaccine hub for Avery County. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Avery County staff assisted in any area needed to make the clinic run efficiently.
Over a period of seven days, 710 vaccines were administered to the 75 and older age group, and 1275 vaccines were administered to the 65 and older age group. In total, 1,985 vaccines were administered.
The collaborative effort between each of the Avery County Government Departments has not gone unnoticed. Several media outlets have covered the daily operations. Additionally, there has been extreme interest from other municipalities in the organizational structure of the vaccine clinic.
Currently, the vaccine supply has been halted. As soon as a new supply is received, the clinic will resume, and N.C. Cooperative Extension of Avery County staff will be eager to serve the community.
